BAG CARE TIPS

MAINTAIN DESIGNER BAGS PROPERLY

Before you use your new handbag for the first time and in everyday use, you should pay attention to a few things so that you can enjoy your new favorite accessory for as long as possible.

We have put together the most important tips and tricks for bag care for you here.

THE MOST IMPORTANT STEPS

PREVENTION WITH WATERPROOFING SPRAY

We recommend that you impregnate every leather bag. This allows you to optimally protect them from rain and moisture, so that no unsightly stains remain. A good impregnation spray is already available at reasonable prices. It is important that this is reapplied about every six weeks so that the effect does not lose its effectiveness over time. The following applies: less is more! Too much care can permanently damage the leather. So it is better to apply less spray, but all the more often

By the way, did you know that moisture can also build up in plastic bags? For optimal storage of your handbag, it is best to always use the dust bag provided. In addition, your bag should not be exposed to extreme light or heat sources (including sunlight) and should be protected from bruising and friction.

CLEANING HANDBAGS

Should it happen that your handbag has gotten damp and water stains have formed, please avoid UV light and heating. UV light leads to fading of the leather and affects the quality, heating heat can lead to breakage or deformation of the leather. A leather bag stuffed with lots of paper dries best in the fresh air.

If there is a stain on your designer bag, the first thing to do is: don’t panic! Most of the time, there is an easy way to safely remove this. First try to remove the stain with a special sponge or leather eraser to protect the bag as much as possible. Be sure to test the cleaning tool on an inconspicuous area beforehand to make sure it’s also suitable for your handbag.

By the way: An absolute no-go when cleaning bags is nail polish remover! With this aggressive agent you only increase the damage unnecessarily and can damage the leather permanently.

MAINTAIN DESIGNER BAGS PROPERLY

Every handbag is different and every type of leather has its own special requirements. So it is logical
that every leather needs individual care. Here you can see the best tips at a glance.

MAINTAIN SMOOTH LEATHER

Smooth leather refers to all types of leather whose grain side is processed outwards. There are countless types of smooth leather; on some the natural grain structure is still visible, others are simply smooth.

The best way to protect and care for a handbag made of smooth leather is with a special leather cream – this keeps the leather supple for a long time and the handbag is protected from fading by a UV filter. Alternatively, you can use a mild cleaning foam that protects the leather and keeps it supple – similar to milk.

Important: Never apply too much! Overdosing can cause unsightly stains because the leather can no longer absorb the care. The cream may even stain your clothes.

MAINTAIN SUEDE

Suede leather is leather that has been sanded on the surface and is characterized by a velvety texture and a nice, warm feel. These include suede, suede and nubuck. Suede leather is particularly sensitive and requires special, sensitive care. Therefore, please use products that are specifically designed for suede leather, such as foams, sprays or special cleaners. We also recommend roughening the leather regularly with a suede brush or a suede sponge to avoid smooth spots. Impregnation should also be a matter of course every six weeks.

Smaller stains and light soiling, which often occurs with UGG boots, can be easily brushed off. A special eraser for nubuck or suede leather helps with large stains. An absolute no-go for suede cleaning is water! Please never clean the suede with soap and water – this will only worsen the stains.

MAINTAIN PATENT LEATHER

Patent leather is a high-gloss, grain-free leather that has been varnished on the surface or covered with a glossy, mirror-smooth foil. The leather is thus optimally protected. Handbags made of patent leather are therefore probably the most frugal of all leather bags when it comes to care. You can safely do without care milk, creams, fats or similar. A damp (microfibre) cloth is recommended for cleaning stains.

However, care should be taken when storing it, because patent leather tends to scratch and also literally absorbs foreign dyes. So that your patent leather bag does not discolour, you should make sure that it does not come into contact with other handbags for a long time.

MAINTAIN CANVAS

Although canvas bags do not fall under the leather category, they should be treated just as lovingly. The material made of solid cotton fabric is actually very robust, but stains or water splashes are always possible. For this reason, we recommend waterproofing canvas regularly as well.

If an uncoated canvas bag is soiled, conventional home remedies are usually sufficient; a damp sponge and mild soap are sufficient to successfully remove stains.

Tip: Make sure to buy a PU-coated canvas bag if you are looking for an extra durable handbag. It is not only water-repellent, but also particularly resistant to stains!

MAINTAIN ARTIFICIAL LEATHER

Artificial leather is not just artificial leather: Depending on the type and composition, special care is always required. A distinction can be made between polyurethane, vinyl and microfiber materials with a suede look. Polyurethane is water resistant, but has pores that water can penetrate. Vinyl, on the other hand, is completely impervious to water.

Water should be used very sparingly with suede-look microfiber materials, as it can penetrate the material and damage the layer underneath. In the worst case, it can even lead to mold growth.

For all types of artificial leather, we also recommend regular impregnation with a suitable spray and a care foam, which is applied with a polishing cloth. Slight dirt can be removed in no time at all with a cleaning brush and a mild imitation leather cleaner.
